Spotted Gum

Perched on a coastal cliff top overlooking a rugged Australian beach, this sculptural, timber weekender is divided over two levels.

The first floor is carefully articulated around a significant existing gum tree. The open plan orientates towards the dramatic ocean views, while filtering northern sunlight. The main bedroom retreat is also located on this level. Large terraces for entertaining encompass the main living rooms on all elevations, and provide sheltered protection from prevailing winds.

The lower floor provides four private and contained guest suites with framed views of the beach and ocean. Recessing this level minimises its visual impact from the beach and makes it appear as a single-level dwelling.

The interior joinery and furniture are inspired by colours of the rugged coastal environment.

This was the first of two projects for this client.
